Creation Corner: The Survey of Cornwall
Monday May 01, 2023
Monday May 01, 2023
Creation Corner: It has been A LONG TIME since we last put together a Creation Corner episode, so it's high time! Join us in this episode as we look at a book that is full of all sorts of great ideas for Dungeon Masters who are trying to build rich worlds. The Survey of Cornwall was published in 1602, and captures what life was like at the time; mining the text for details could help you round out parts of your world to make for a better play experience. It's worth a read, and we'd love to know what you think!
The book is available on Amazon, for a price. If you don't want to spend the money or don't have shelf space, it's also available for free on the Internet Archive.
If you want to check out a song that showcases a rather overblown version of the Cornish accent, you'll want to listen to The Combine Harvester, which hit number one on charts in 1976. (There may not have been a lot going on in music then, but I can't get it out of my head.) It's silly, but fun.

Creation Corner: Karavi
Monday May 08, 2023
Monday May 08, 2023
Creation Corner: After getting the taste for our Creation Corner series again, we share another this week. This time, we take on drawing a map of the city of Karavi, where the current story centers. Sit down with Rhett as he draws a wobbly sketch of the city living in his head. Listen now (and follow along on Discord) to see how it's laid out.
During this episode, we reference several things that we'd like to link to here. Be sure to check these out to enhance your listening experience:
Check out pictures of Manarola, a picturesque hamlet located along north Italy's Amalfi Coast. The colorful buildings tumbling down to the water and the tiny cove make for a homey feel that heavily influenced the mental picture of Karavi's sprawl.
For additional reference to Kassara, check out our (incomplete) wiki page to see the islands and their location with relation to each other.
Don't forget to visit our Discord server's #art-and-such channel to see the consecutive pictures of the map as it grows.

Creation Corner: Flavoring Up the Barbarian’s Rage
Monday Jun 19, 2023
Monday Jun 19, 2023
Creation Corner: It's so easy to let game mechanics feel, well, mechanical. But they don't have to be! D&D and other RPGs draw from rich sources, and if we know a little more about them, we can find ways to use the extra detail to enrich our games.
In this episode, we consider the 5e barbarian's rage, and how it seems to draw from the tradition of the Norse berserker. We'll look at some aspects that may be familiar, and some that may be not so familiar, and then consider a couple ways to use these facets to drive rewarding roleplay at the table.

Creation Corner: It's so easy to let game mechanics feel, well, mechanical. But they don't have to be! D&D and other RPGs draw from rich sources, and if we know a little more about them, we can find ways to use the extra detail to enrich our games.
In this episode, we consider the 5e Rogue class feature of thieves' cant, and its shadowy origins as revealed through English literature from the 15 and 1600s. We'll look at how it was used, other specialized speech and writing designed to allow direct communication with others while in public, and then consider some ways to use these facets to drive rewarding roleplay at the table.

Creation Corner: Rhett has always been fascinated by accounts of druids. In this Creation Corner episode, he digs into the history of this elusive group by looking at scattered accounts from classical literature to see how the ancient world viewed them. For your reference, here are the links to the various accounts:
The Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers, by Diogenes Laertius (Prologue)
Concerning the Gallic War, by Julius Caesar (Book 6, Section 13)
On Divination, by Marcus Tullius Cicero (Book 1, Section 90)
The Library of History, by Diodorus Siculus (Book 5, Section 30)
The Geography, by Strabo (Book 4, Chapter 4)
The Natural History, by Gaius Plinius Secoundus (Book 16, Chapter 95)
Concerning the Description of the World, by Pomponius Mela (Book 3, Sections 18-19)
Pharsalia, by Lucan (from Book1 and Book 3)
Annales, by Tacitus (Book 14, Sections 29-30)
Rerum Gestarum, by Ammianus Marcellinus (Book 15, Section 9)
We provide these links so you can read along if you'd like, and to do some reading around the passages to increase your awareness of the context. Seriously, this is captivating stuff, and we hope you enjoy it.

Special: The Fate Tree
Monday Oct 23, 2023
Monday Oct 23, 2023
Special: This episode is a bit of a sneak peek into Season 6, anticipating an early episode in which it'll be used. It was fun--but challenging--to write, but shares some things that will quickly become relevant.
Here's the text:
Urðaþollr
Along the high Spine, heaven-reaching world-roof, The mountains rise marching north and south. Rain-wet clouds scowl, send their riches east and west. From the old and lofty hold, our halls and homes of stone, Here too great wealth flows out: not wealth of water or gold, But of weary folk fleeing for fear or fame, Seeking fleeting gain on sea-foam steeds. They leave their fathers’ lands to look for loathsome gold.
How sad it is to sing of souls now lost, Of blood-bought home with blades hard won, Now sold for want of gold and lusting eyes. Brave names, brave deeds are borne in lasting names: Brísingr, who held the pass with but a torch against a host; Of Grimr and Moinn, good brothers that stood when others turned; And Vili the wordless: in wilderness he fought the deadly beast. These lives are bound in us, are laid into our streets.
I feel upon my head the heft of godly sight To know ahead of time how days unfold. On a day when green lights shine a gate of air appears; From it comes our hope with friends from far. Their coming warms our hearts but hastens dark times. I fall at their feet, these fearsome ones, Yet in their glow I find all fear is gone.
Their hands will find a way to form the fate-tree, To use the magic of music, water, light, earth To fatten the trunk, unfurl the leaf, To prepare from it a haft, a hefty spear-haft The clan may raise to call to young and old. Its blade will catch the sun and send word through the land That Rindis is not lost to reaching dark. Its spirit is alight and speaks of war.

Ep 150: Season 6 begins NOW. Jump into a new corner of Edelenn as the party steps through yet another portal. The world lies before them, and a pillar yet to be discovered lies hidden somewhere nearby, but what adventure awaits in this new land? Get started on the final chapter of our epic story as we share the next part of this story.
In this episode, Rhett mentions the Gol stavkyrkje in southern Norway. Here's a picture for reference, although the central hall of Hártunstaðr is considerably larger: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gol_Stave_Church#/media/File:Gol_stavkirke.jpg
He also mentions a music video. Here's the link for that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_EBFvzyje8
